Message for Britain in 2021 Survey Respondents

Welcome to the Britain in 2021 website. The project is managed by The University of Manchester and the University of Oxford. The Scientific Leadership Team is comprised of Professor Maria Sobolewska (Manchester), Professor Ed Fieldhouse (Manchester), Dr Nicole Martin (Manchester), Professor Steve Fisher (Oxford) and Dr Jon Mellon (Manchester).

You have been randomly selected to take part in our survey – Britain in 2021 – part of the UK’s most important study of electoral behaviour, conducted since 1964. In order to make accurate comparisons over time, we need the survey to be as representative of the British population as possible. That means ensuring that as many as possible of the people we have selected for the study complete the survey. We would therefore be very grateful for your participation.

You can complete the survey by following this link.

The fieldwork is being carried out by Ipsos MORI, a highly reputable market research organisation. You can find out more about Ipsos MORI here. Ipsos MORI have set up special help lines for respondents, please call 0800 182 2137.

If you still have any other queries or concerns, please contact the Britain in 2021 team here. If you would prefer to phone, please use the number for Ipsos MORI listed above.

We will be asking you questions about your political views on behalf of researchers at the University of Manchester and University of Oxford. You are under no obligation to answer the questions, participation in the survey is voluntary and you can change your mind at any time by closing the browser window.

Ipsos MORI is a member of the Market Research Society. All information that you give us will be treated in the strictest confidence and your identity will not be passed on to a third party or connected to your answers in any way. Your anonymized data will be used by academic researchers to better understand public opinion in Britain.

Participant Information Sheet

Who is carrying out the study?

Ipsos MORI, an independent research organisation, is carrying out the study on behalf of the Universities of Manchester and Oxford. You can find out more about Ipsos MORI at www.ipsosmori.com. This project has been reviewed by the ethics committee of the University of Manchester and the Economic and Social Research Council.

What is this survey about?

The survey is about the state of the nation in Britain in 2021. Questions cover a variety of topics, including democracy, the economy, what you think about politicians, the environment etc. Your responses will allow the research team to better understand and report on the current state of affairs in Britain and used in published research.

Why has my address been chosen?

Your address has been randomly selected from the Post Office’s list of addresses in Great Britain. It is important to have a strictly random selection to ensure we get a representative picture of people living in Britain. To ensure our results are accurate, we rely on the voluntary co-operation of those invited to take part – no other address can take the place of yours!

What do we do if there is only one person aged 18 or over in your household?

We would be grateful if that person could complete the survey.

What do we do if there is more than one person aged 18 or over in your household?

Please ask the person with the next birthday to complete the survey. It is very important that this person completes the survey and not someone else. The selection procedure was designed by academics and is meant to ensure the high-quality nature of the survey.

No access to the Internet?

If you would like to take part in the survey, but do not have access to the Internet, please contact Ipsos MORI and we will send a paper version of the questionnaire. We will also send a pre-paid envelope, so you can post it back free of charge.

How to get your reward once you have completed the survey

Once you have completed the survey, you will be asked for your email address. An email will then be sent to you within one week with a link to a website where you can claim your £5 or £25 voucher. This can be used with a range of retailers.
